2.Extension

Chrome extension

Q1How do I install the extension?

Open the Chess Opens listing on the Chrome Web Store and click 'Add to Chrome'. It works in Chrome and in Chromium browsers that install from the Chrome Web Store, like Microsoft Edge and Brave. Pin the icon from the puzzle-piece menu in the toolbar so the popup is one click away. Open the Chrome Web Store listing →

Q2The highlights aren't showing up. What should I check?

First, make sure you're in a game against a Chess.com bot (Play → Computer) or on the analysis board. The extension stays off everywhere else on Chess.com. Then open the popup and check the switch in the top-right corner is on. If it still shows nothing, reload the Chess.com tab. The extension reads the board when the page loads, so a reload fixes most glitches.

Q3It's showing moves for the wrong color.

The extension reads your color from the board's orientation, which works for every normal game. If you've flipped the board manually, open the popup and set 'My color' to Always White or Always Black.

Q4The tiles disappeared in the middle of my opening.

That means you played a move the plan didn't expect. By default the tile for that move drops out and the rest of the plan carries on. If the whole opening vanished, the 'If I play a different move' setting is on 'Hide the whole opening'. Switch it to 'Drop that move, keep the rest' to keep going.

Q5My custom opening shows an error.

Custom moves are your moves only, in order, written as from/to squares: d2d4 c1f4 e2e3. Use O-O for short castling and O-O-O for long castling. Each move needs a piece of yours standing on the from-square at that point in the plan, so check the order if a later move is flagged.

Q6Is it allowed on Chess.com?

Chess.com's Fair Play Policy doesn't allow browser extensions in games against other people. Chess Opens only switches on in bot games and on the analysis board, which the policy doesn't cover, and does nothing in games against people.

Q7My settings didn't carry over to my other computer.

Settings are saved with Chrome's sync storage. They follow you between browsers only when you're signed in to Chrome with sync turned on in both places. Otherwise each browser keeps its own settings.

Q8How do I remove the extension?

Right-click the Chess Opens icon in the Chrome toolbar and choose 'Remove from Chrome', or go to chrome://extensions and click Remove. Your settings go with it.

3.Trainer

Opening trainer

Q1Where is my progress saved?

In your browser's local storage, on your device. There are no accounts. Clearing your browser's site data for chessopens.app erases your stars and run history, and switching browsers or devices starts fresh.

Q2The board isn't responding or looks broken.

Reload the page first. If that doesn't help, try a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac) to pull the latest version of the trainer, and check that the browser is up to date.

Q3Can I use the trainer on my phone?

Yes. The trainer works in any modern mobile browser. Drag pieces or tap the from-square and then the to-square to move.

Q4Can I suggest an opening or report a wrong move?

Please do. Use the contact details below and include the opening name and the move you think is wrong. Every line is checked before it goes live, but mistakes slip through.
